Get Involved

CalTeach is eager to explore opportunities to work with new partners interested in improving STEM education in the Bay Area and across the state. Current UC Berkeley students can get involved with CalTeach through our academic Program. We encourage other individuals or groups to browse the pages below for opportunities, or get in touch with our CalTeach Team.

Volunteer Opportunities

For Students

If you have an interest in volunteering in local STEM classrooms, please consider signing up for our CalTeach Courses, since many of them have field placements in which you can get hands-on teaching experience.

For Berkeley Faculty & Staff

As a program primarily for STEM majors, Cal Teach interacts with many academic departments in related fields and we would like to explore increasing these on-campus partnerships. For departmental student advisors and other staff seeking more information about CalTeach, please get in touch with our Student Services Coordinator.

CalTeach is also expanding partnerships with faculty. One key area where faculty involvement is crucial is for research placements for the CalTeach Summer Research Institute. For faculty interested in taking on an instructional role in the CalTeach program, UGIS/EDUC C122: Research Methods is an ideal fit.

In broadening our campus relationships, Cal Teach is also seeking faculty interested in improving K–12 STEM education to act as Faculty Affiliates or Advisory Board members. Campus faculty interested in working with the Cal Teach program are encouraged to get in touch with the faculty co-directors, Professor Deb Nolan (Statistics) or Professor Eugene Chiang (Astrophysics & Earth and Planetary Science).

For Corporations & Non-Profits

The Bay Area is a regional, national, and international leader in many STEM fields and CalTeach is eager to work with corporations and nonprofits interested in helping to prepare the next generation of K–12 educators in these disciplines. Please contact faculty co-directors Professor Deb Nolan and Professor Eugene Chiang if your organization would like to explore a partnership with CalTeach.

For K-12 Teachers

Local K–12 science and math teachers are an integral part of the CalTeach program and we are always eager to connect and work with educators interested in supporting the next generation of outstanding teachers. If you are a K–12 science or math teacher in the Bay Area and are interested in working with CalTeach undergraduates through field placements or mentoring credential students, please contact us!

Mentor a CalTeach Student

Local K–12 science and math teachers are an integral part of the CalTeach program and we are always eager to connect and work with educators interested in supporting the next generation of outstanding teachers. We depend on experienced elementary, middle school, and high school teachers to serve as mentors to our students during their field-based experiences.

Mentor Teachers open their classrooms to CalTeach students, offering guidance and support as they begin to learn about classroom teaching. Pairs of CalTeach students come into the classroom to observe and assist mentor teachers for 1–4 hours a week.

If you would like a pair of volunteers this upcoming semester please email the Student Services Coordinator at advising_calteach@berkeley.edu.

To voice any concerns regarding your current mentee(s) this semester please email the Student Services Coordinator at advising_calteach@berkeley.edu.

Summer Research Institute

The Berkeley Engineering Research Experiences for Teachers (BERET+D) is an NSF-funded program that provides teachers and teachers-to-be with paid summer research fellowships. The program promotes the development and teaching of lessons that connect engineering and data science research to K-12 science and mathematics curricula. Teachers will receive a $6000 stipend for 6 weeks of full-time research plus a bonus stipend opportunity for attending professional development workshops during the academic year.

For more information, please visit our Summer Research Institute for K-12 Teachers page.
