Information for Students:
Cal Teach Science and Math Education Minor

This Cal Teach Science and Mathematics Education (SME) minor provides
students with an opportunity to examine mathematics and science education
from a variety of perspectives. This minor is designed for students considering
a career in mathematics or science teaching in K12 schools, but is also
applicable for students who are interested in teaching at the community
college or university levels, or students who are seeking a more general
background in mathematics and science education. This SME minor includes
not only academic inquiry, but also field work which provides students
with experiences working in local K12 classrooms.
Students who participate in the minor are expected to be STEM majors.
To make sure that students have the ability to fit the minor program into
their major we are looking to the L&S breadth requirements. The history
course already satisfies the Historical Studies requirement. We plan to
apply to get Knowing and Learning in Mathematics and Science to fulfill
the Social & Behavioral requirement, and to get Teaching Mathematics and
Science: A Focus on Equity and Urban Schools to fulfill the Philosophy
& Value requirement. We are also considering getting the Research Methods
course approved as a technical elective in the majors.
The Cal Teach SME minor has the following requirements:
Historical Perspective
